SMART Girls Receive Cooking Demonstration at the Waterside Grill

Twelve WBGC members, ages 8-14, spent a Saturday learning about healthy cooking and nutrition. The outing was arranged as part of the SMART Girls program, which is run twice yearly at WBGC over eight-week sessions, and which teaches healthy life skills and self-esteem building for girls.  Junior League of Seattle sponsored the cooking event, and provided volunteers to work alongside WBGC staff for the day.

The girls got a lesson in nutrition at the Club, and then the crew all took a field trip to the Waterside Grill.  They were treated to an exclusive session with the restaurant's executive chef, Steve Cain.  The chef gave the girls a cooking lesson, walking them through a recipe for chicken avocado wraps.

After their hard work in the kitchen, the girls sat down to enjoy their efforts, eating the meals they'd prepared.  With full stomachs, the girls went through a nutrition workshop with the Junior League volunteers.  The girls enjoyed hands-on projects to learn about food pyramids, serving sizes, and how to read food labels with a discerning eye.

After that, the whole group went to a local PCC for some tips on healthy shopping, where they also received goody bags filled with healthy treats and a small gift certificate for each girl to spend.  A scavenger hunt at PCC led the girls to comb the aisles in search of items essential to a balanced diet.

Many thanks to the Junior League, the Waterside Grill, and the PCC for this fun opportunity to teach our kids about healthy lifestyles.
